Guest Commentary by The Colorado Parent Advocacy Network (CPAN) Board of Directors
Is it possible to restore a rigorous, non-political, safe and fulfilling educational experience for all students in Colorado?
Have you seen a rise in political agendas and ideals contrary to your values, being pushed on your children in school? Is your school demonstrating an anti-parent rhetoric, suggesting that parents are ignorant or old fashioned? Does your school instruct your children to keep secrets (i.e., pronouns, name changes, gender specific plans) from parents? Does your school encourage a negative view of the child, his family, his country, or his future? Does your school force your child to answer questionnaires about your family’s attitudes, behaviors, customs, and political views that invade privacy? What is your school’s sex-ed curriculum teaching? Are your students falling behind academically because the focus is more on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) rather than English, History, Math, and Science? These are just a few of the many questions that brought a group of concerned parents together to brainstorm ideas on how to unify like-minded parents and teachers to bring back Colorado schools to its original purpose: educate without politics.
The Colorado Parent Advocacy Network (CPAN) is a collaborative statewide network in which parents, stakeholders and educators can purposefully work together to restore a rigorous, non-political, safe and fulfilling educational experience for all students. This is achieved through a culture of accountability for academic excellence, accessibility to school choice, partnerships with families, and curricula transparency.
The Colorado Parent Advocacy Network (CPAN) is a 501c4 statewide organization that is guided by America’s founding principles. CPAN provides the following resources and support to ensure the children of Colorado receive a quality education:
- School-based audits to ensure institutional practices allow for safe and equal opportunity, freedom of speech, and an age-appropriate, balanced curriculum that is absent of political agendas guaranteeing the opportunity for all students to be supported on their individual pathways.
- The CPAN Seal of Approval to schools that demonstrate a commitment to ensuring district transparency, accountability, partnerships with families and that curricula are guided by academic excellence and aligned with non-political, common-sense values.
- Educational resources, informational classes and advocacy support for parents and stakeholders.
- Mentorship for establishing an advocacy group.
- Connections for educators to support transparency, create community and access alternative resources for professional liability protection.
- Advocacy at the state level on topics such as academic standards, parents’ rights, and accessibility to school choice.
