Sonnenberg is ‘Defender of a Free Press’

It may be fitting that among the final state legislative honors Sen. Jerry Sonnenberg, R-Sterling, may receive is an award connecting him back to a time in life prior to politics.

He’s well known as a farmer and rancher, but for a time he was a teacher and, as many may not recall, a photographer and writer for the Sterling Journal-Advocate newspaper.

He was one of three Republicans and 11 total members of the Colorado Legislature honored Thursday with awards from the Colorado Press Association. Sonnenberg was presented the Defender of a Free Press award.

“I’m humbled and thankful to be recognized,” he said, as an inaugural recipient of the award.
